The kennel

The LEE Kennel brings it all together - great function, high quality, innovative styling, and affordable price. The kennel comes in standard sizes, 4 or 6 feet wide by 4, 6, 8, or 10 feet deep, by 6 feet high. The kennel will provide years of trouble-free use with a minimum amount of maintenance.

The kennel consists of a stainless steel gate with a dual MagnaLatch® dog-bone handle, HDPE (high-density polyethylene) panels, and a new HDPE connection system to put it all together. For more information about the use of HDPE in kennels, read the Pet Care Facility Construction section below.

The stainless steel gate


In a typical 4'x6' kennel, the front panel is 4' wide and 6' high and includes a 3' gate. The gate has no threshhold to trap contaminants or to trip over when you enter the kennel.

The gate is made of high quality Grade 304 stainless steel (6mm standard) wire mesh .  Grade 304’s resistance to corrosion and oxidation makes it ideal for the potentially caustic kennel environment.  Because it withstands the corrosive action of various acids, it is used for sinks, cookware, cutlery, surgical instruments, and major appliances.  Food transport and storage tankers are often stainless steel due to its corrosion and stain resistance and antibacterial properties. 

Stainless steel can be sterilized and does not need to be painted or refinished.  It is a low maintenance solution and retains its luster after cleaning.  Stainless steel is tough, easy to clean, and attractive.

Some competitive kennels have galvanized steel gates, which are more likely to corrode, especially under wet conditions.  The galvanized mesh is not as smooth, may have sharp edges, and is more difficult to clean.

The gate includes a dual MagnaLatch® dog-bone handle.  The latch’s two points of contact help ensure that the gate won’t twist if a dog jumps against it.  The dog bone connecting the two MagnaLatches makes the gate easy for you to open but difficult for a dog to open. The gate has a full 320° swing and can be opened easily from the inside or outside with one hand.

The HDPE panels

Panel In a typical 4'x6' kennel, the 6'x6' side panels are made up of a stylish 2' high dogbone panel which is installed on top of a plain 4' high panel. The rear panel, which is used when the kennels do not back up to a wall, are constructed the same way.

The LEE kennel consists of the following parts as applicable for your installation. The diagram shows an example of a 4'x6' kennel.


The kennels are designed to be easy to clean and hygienic.  The panels are made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which is very durable, tough, and abrasion resistant.  HDPE is FDA approved for food use and is resistant to chemicals, moisture, stain, and odors.  Its high resistance to chemical cleaning agents and urine makes it an ideal material for kennels. It’s easy to maintain never needs painting or resurfacing.

Because of HDPE’s resistance to chemicals, it is commonly used to package many cleaning products including detergents and bleaches. Due to its inherent nature, HDPE doesn’t harbor bacteria.

Sanitation is a key concern in a pet care facility.  The Pet Care Services Association booklet, How to Select a Pet Care Facility, recommends the following guideline to a pet owner when choosing a pet care facility: 

There should be a strict schedule of disinfecting with effective chemicals. Daycare “potty” areas should be well-maintained and without discernible odor. Solid waste should be removed immediately and
there should be a disinfecting process in place for urine.

The ABKA Code of Ethics contains the following items from the kennel facility to the owner of the pet being boarded: 

2.       We will provide Security and Safety for all boarded pets by means of proper kennel design, good animal handling procedures, adequate separation between animals, and by keeping all pet boarding areas free of potential hazards.

3.       We will maintain a sanitary environment for all boarded pets.

The HDPE connection system

The panels are connected to each other and to the floor using HDPE connectors rather than brackets and screws.  This gives the kennel a neat, clean look and helps eliminate areas that trap hair, bacteria, and waste. This method of installation helps prevent cross contamination and makes the kennels easier to install and easier to clean.

The HDPE panels are connected to each other or to the wall using 3-way and X-connectors that are inserted into grooves along the edge of the panel.

There are no nuts or bolts inside the kennel. The only bolts are those on the exterior of the kennel, connecting adjacent gate panels together and connecting the gate panels to the dog-bone panels. There are two concrete bolts connecting the gate panel to the floor.

HDPE panels have a groove in the bottom which allows them to sit on inverted T-tracks, also made of HDPE. The T track snugly fits into the groove at the bottom of the HDPE panel because of the matching sloped design of the T and the groove. ation matched to the T. This mate system allows for sealing on all edges, not just the top of the T.

Sealant is used to adhere the T-tracks to the floor. This prevents fluids from seeping into adjacent kennels, helping to prevent cross contamination from one kennel to another during normal usage and cleaning.

Kennels are typically side by side and may back up to each other either by sharing a common rear panel or by backing up to a wall. Kennels may be in any of the following configurations:

Cleaning the kennels

Since the gate is stainless steel and the panels and connectors are HDPE, the kennel is easy to maintain. To prevent any adverse effect of animal waste, weather, and cleaning chemicals, be sure to follow basic kennel sanitation guidelines, such as daily and weekly cleaning to remove acidic urine and salts. When you are cleaning the floor, be sure to spray the panels too.

Wipe down the stainless steel gate with a cleaning solution that is safe for your animals, and rinse off. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for using the product in your environment.

Pet Care Facility Construction

The following information is taken from the Pet Services Journal, November / December 2008: Doing It Right: Pet Care Facility Construction, pages 24, 26, and 56, the Enclosures section.


Next, let's think about pet enclosures. There are many good pet enclosure vendors. Sometimes, however, in the effort to be state of the art or cutting edge, the new designs that solve some problems actually create others. Look for a minimum of cracks or crevices where cleaning would become difficult. (Most unpleasant "kennel smells" come from hidden bacteria growing in those hard-to-get-to hidden areas.)

Many enclosures have special innovations such as glass fronts, special easy-to-use latches, guillotine door pulley systems, resting benches, etc. However the "state of the art" portion of these new enclosures is the now wide use of HDPE (high density polyethylene) in their construction. This is the same product used for premium cutting boards and counters in many industrial and commercial applications, from meat packing plants to the kitchens of many of the finest restaurants.

This premium thermoplastic board is preferred in commercial food applications as it meets critical government regulations for food preparation and cleanliness criteria. It is virtually indestructible in terms of cracking, warping, chipping, peeling, and acid corrosion. HDPE will not absorb odors or moisture due to its molecular makeup, therefore cleaning agents and surface residue simply rinses away. Independent / government institutions agree that the best cleaning protocol for HDPE is washing using a hot soapy water solution and scrubbing with a brush. HDPE will not corrode, tuberculate, or suppport biologic growth. It is impact resistant and is the material of choice in harsh chemical environments. It can be used for wainscot protection instead of epoxy paint on all wall surfaces. It can be used for mop area and walk-in shower area in place of tile or block. It maintains its color over the expected 50- to 100-year life expectancy. It comes in thicknesses of 1/16 to 3/4 inch, widths from 30 to 60 inches, lengths up to 300 feet, and now a selection of different colors. These lengths can greatly reduce the number of joints and, therefore, the number of places water can penetrate and bacteria, mold, and mildew can hide and grow. Its many colors add to a friendly appearance.
